Andriy Viytovych

 

 

Ukrainian violist Andriy Viytovych is Principal Violist of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, a post he has held since 2000. His performances as a soloist at the Royal Opera House include in Pierrot lunaire and After the Rainfor The Royal Ballet. In 2015 he performed the Walton, Bartók and Hindemith viola concertos with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House to raise money for the charity St Mungo’s Broadway.Viytovych trained at the Lviv Conservatory and International Menuhin Music Academy, with such teachers as Alberto Lysy and Johannes Eskær. He was co-principal viola at the London Symphony Orchestra before being appointed Principal Viola of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House in 2000. He has played with orchestras including the BBC Symphony Orchestra,Scottish Chamber Orchestra, London Sinfonietta and Berlin Philharmonic under Simon Rattle, and has worked with conductors including Pierre Boulez, Colin Davis, Bernard Haitink,Mstislav Rostropovich and Georg Solti.


He has collaborated with many chamber ensembles and toured with leading orchestras, appearing at festivals including the BBC Proms. He is principal viola of the English Sinfonia and a viola professor at the Royal College of Music.Viytovych’s repertory as a soloist includes all the major viola concertos and chamber works.His recordings include works by Holst with English Sinfonia for Naxos.
