Composer Symposium Description

As part of the festival, workshops for composers will be held, led by composers Karl Fiorini and Ignacy Zalewski. Each selected participant will have the opportunity to consult their own techniques and artistic ideas during daily individual sessions with the instructors. Group workshops will also be conducted with the participation of a string quartet, focusing on compositional techniques, stylistic diversity, and score reading.

Participants will be able to explore all theoretical and practical aspects of their compositions.

The composition workshops will conclude with an author’s concert, during which the string quartet will perform the works of the selected participants.

Regulations

The Szczecin Classic Composer Symposium provides young composers with an opportunity to present their original works for string quartet, collaborate with professional musicians, and receive expert artistic feedback.

  • Participation is open to composers of all nationalities up to the age of 35. Submitted works must be original compositions for string quartet with a maximum duration of 12 minutes.
  • Submissions must be sent electronically by 30 January 2026 and should include:
    A score in PDF format
    • A MIDI or audio recording (if available)
    • A short description or program notes

A non-refundable registration fee of 100 PLN (20 EUR) should be transferred to:

Selection Process

  • A committee composed of music professionals and festival organizers will evaluate all submissions. The selection will be based on artistic value, originality, and practical feasibility for performance by a string quartet. Selected composers will be notified by email.

Participant Benefits

  • Selected participants will receive access to active workshops with the string quartet, entry to Szczecin Classic concerts, participation in a lecture on compositional development, and attendance at rehearsals and masterclasses as observers.

Symposium Details

The symposium takes place during the Szczecin Classic Festival. Sessions will be led by Dr. Karl Fiorini and Dr hab. Ignacy Zalewski, offering guidance and constructive critique.

Performance Rights

  • Selected participants agree to the performance of their works during the symposium. Composers retain full copyright to their compositions.

Festival Concert Performance

  • Selected works will be publicly performed during a Szczecin Classic Festival concert, with audio and video recording.

Travel and Accommodation

  • The organizers will provide accommodation for selected composers. Participants are responsible for covering their own travel expenses.

Publication and Recordings

  • Performances may be recorded for promotional purposes by the Szczecin Classic Festival. Composers retain full rights to their works and may independently publish or record them.

Agreement

  • By submitting an application, participants accept these regulations and the decisions of the organizing committee. The committee reserves the right to make changes to the regulations.
