Szczecin Classic Composer Symposium

The festival will include a workshop for composers, led by the eminent composer Karl Fiorini. Each of the qualified participants will have the opportunity to consult his or her own techniques and ideas with professionals during the daily individual classes. Improvement and expansion of competences will also be provided by group workshops conducted with a string quartet on compositional techniques, different styles, and score reading.
Participants will be able to delve into all the theoretical and practical layers of their compositions. The composition workshop will conclude with an author’s concert, at which the string quartet will perform works by qualified participants

Regulations for the Composer Symposium

The Szczecin Classic Composer Symposium is a prestigious platform for emerging composers to showcase their original works for string quartet. Selected compositions will be performed by the Neuma Quartet, the ensemble in residence for the Szczecin Classic Festival.

  1. Objective

The symposium aims to provide a unique opportunity for composers to present their works, collaborate with professional musicians, and receive valuable feedback from leading composer Dr. Karl Fiorini.

  1. Eligibility
  • Open to composers of all nationalities.
  • Submissions must be original compositions for string quartet, with a maximum length of 12 minutes.
  • There are no age restrictions for applicants.
  1. Submission Guidelines
  • Submit compositions electronically to the designated email address by February 28th.
  • Submissions should include:
    • A PDF score.
    • A MIDI or audio recording (if available).
    • Brief program notes or a description of the piece.

  1. Selection Process
  • A panel of judges comprising music professionals and organizers will review submissions.
  • Selection will be based on originality, artistic merit, and suitability for performance by the Neuma Quartet.
  • Selected composers will be notified via email after the submission deadline.
  • Chosen participants will have access to:
    • Active participation in the string quartet workshop.
    • Attendance at Szczecin Classic concerts.
    • Rehearsals and instrumental masterclasses (as listeners).
  1. Symposium Details
  • The symposium is part of the Szczecin Classic Festival.
  • Dr. Karl Fiorini will lead sessions, offering guidance and constructive feedback on selected works.
  1. Performance Rights
  • Selected composers grant the Neuma Quartet permission to perform their works during the symposium.
  • Composers retain all rights to their compositions.
  1. Inclusion in Festival Concert
  • Selected works will be performed in public during the Szczecin Classic Festival concert with the participation of the audience (including audio/video recording)
  1. Travel and Accommodation
  • Accommodation will be provided for selected composers.
  • Travel arrangements must be made independently by participants.
  1. Publication and Recording
  • Performances may be recorded for promotional use by the Szczecin Classic Festival.
  • Composers retain the rights to their works and may pursue publication or additional recording opportunities independently.
  1. Agreement
  • By submitting their compositions, applicants agree to adhere to the symposium regulations and the decisions of the organizing committee.
  • The organizing committee reserves the right to amend regulations as necessary.
